Thursday’s Fox News interview with Rubio included questions on the legal dispute between DeSantis and Disney about the latter’s unique self-governing rights in the state. Fox presenter Brian Kilmeade questioned Rubio on remarks made by other Republicans criticizing DeSantis for singling out the business.
“I don’t have a problem taking on Disney,” Rubio said. The main issue, in my opinion, is whether or not Disney had a deal that granted them governmental-style authority. If so, I believe it was a completely appropriate thing to do.
He added, however, “I think where it gets problematic in the eyes of some people is when you start creating the idea — and I’m not saying we’re there yet as a state — but the idea that somehow, like, if you run crossways with us politically, whoever is in charge, then, you know, you may wind up in the crosshairs of the legislature for political purposes to make a statement.”
Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis on Wednesday, alleging that the governor was attempting to “weaponize government power” by pursuing the business. DeSantis is generally anticipated to run for president.
Disney Parks and Resorts US, Inc. said in its complaint that DeSantis’ actions “threaten Disney’s business operations, jeopardize its economic future in the region, and violate its constitutional rights.”
The legal move followed a year-long spat that saw Disney come out against the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law and DeSantis deprive Disney World of its autonomy in February.
In the Fox News interview, Rubio refuted any claims that Disney may leave Florida as a direct consequence, but he said that a repetition of this legal action might result in firms leaving the state.
“I worry that if this happens too frequently, companies that are considering moving to Florida may decide against doing so because they fear that if they engage them in a political firestorm, they will target their company.”
But Rubio asserted that he doesn’t believe Disney will leave Florida when it comes to the state. They’ve put a lot of effort and money into it, and I believe it will show.
