In response to President Donald Trump’s latest indictment, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sued the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, on Tuesday, requesting that a federal judge nullify any subpoenas Jordan might issue for Bragg or his current or past staff members.
Last Monday, Jordan served Mark Pomerantz with a subpoena, accusing him of politicizing the probe into Trump and pushing Bragg to file charges against the former president. In his court petition on Tuesday, Bragg requested the judge to invalidate any future subpoenas that Jordan or the Committee might issue to him and to stop the enforcement of Pomerantz’s subpoena. He also identified Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee, and Pomerantz as defendants.
for allegations that he reimbursed his former attorney Michael Cohen for hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels for an alleged affair she had with Trump, Bragg charged Trump on 34 charges of falsifying corporate documents. According to the district attorney, Congress lacks the authority to “supervise state criminal prosecutions.”
Bragg said of Jordan that he has “no legitimate legislative purpose” for Pomerantz’s subpoena and that “he and his allies have stated they want the District Attorney to come to Capitol Hill to ‘explain’ himself and to ‘provide a good argument’ to Congress in support of his decision to investigate and prosecute Mr. Trump.” Additionally, they have threatened to “hold Alvin Bragg to account” for the indictment of Mr. Trump by the House of Representatives.
Jordan had stated on Wednesday that House Republicans desired to question Bragg in front of Congress to see whether or not he had collaborated with federal agents prior to the indictment. The day before, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy claimed that Bragg had used public funds to file the accusations against Trump.
Tuesday, in response to the complaint, Jordan tweeted, “First, they indict a president for no crime.” Then, when we inquire about the federal cash they claim to have spent, they file a lawsuit to prevent congressional oversight.
