Kid Rock broke his silence on the passing of a rock music legend with a heartfelt tribute. Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington died yesterday. He was 71. He was the last remaining original member of the legendary rock group.
Kid Rock said: “I was in LA after I recorded All Summer Long and heard my old friend Gary and a bunch of the other Skynrd band and crew were hanging at The Sunset Marquis. I went there and played it for them and they all gave me there blessing and support to release it, especially Gary.
“Heck, Billy Powell even agreed to play piano on it, which he did! So many great memories with Gary. One of the best to ever do it and a wonderful man.
“My prayers go out to Dale, his family and of course the band and all his friends. RIP Gary, your music and soul will rock on for eternity.”
The band said on social media:
“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today.
“Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time,” the post said.
Travis Tritt said:
“I just learned that my dear friend, Gary Rossington passed away today. I’m heartbroken!
“Gary was not only a friend, but a collaborator that wrote songs with me and played guitar with me in studio recordings and onstage so many times.
“My heart goes out to Dale and the girls. RIP.”
According to The New York Post:
Rossington broke both arms and a leg and punctured his stomach and liver in the infamous plane crash.
“It was a devastating thing,” he said in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2006. “You can’t just talk about it real casual and not have feelings about it.”
A decade after the crash, Rossington would rejoin the band after Van Zant’s brother, Johnny Van Zant, had reformed the group.
