A Cook County judge threw the book at a Chicago man who robbed a convenience store at gunpoint while he was on electronic monitoring for robbing another store. The furious judge sentenced Kameron Stevenson, 20, to a stunning (for Chicago) 21-year sentence.
After prosecutors agreed to drop the charges for the first robbery, Stevenson pleaded guilty to armed robbery with a firearm. But Judge Mary Brosnahan was not impressed and dropped the hammer with a 21-year sentence.
One can only imagine what he was thinking when he got dealt such a stiff sentence when every day people get slaps on the wrist in Chicago. Maybe this is a trend in the right direction for the City that has seen crime soar in the last few years.
The media only covers crime when it happens in the wealthy downtown district. But the soaring crime hits low-income communities the hardest. Something Lori Lightfoot should think about.
In the first case, Stevens went behind a store counter and fought with the cashier for control of the cash register.
Stevenson put his hand inside his hoodie pocket and asked the clerk, “Do you want to die?”
He grabbed the cash register and tried to make a run for it but the store owner gave chase.
Stevenson threw the cash register at the employee and fled the scene, but the attempted theft was caught on video.
Stevenson posted a $2,500 bail deposit and was put on home on electronic monitoring.
On December 2, 2021, Stevenson wrapped aluminum foil around his electronic monitoring bracelet to block the signal. Is it that easy?
Stevenson then walked to a convenience store in the 6000 block of South Kedzie on Chicago’s south side.
He pointed a gun at the clerk’s face and demanded the cash register. He then attempted to grab the loot.
But the clerk was not cooperating.
Stevenson tried to grab the cash register and the clerk fought back. This time he got away with the machine and its contents.
Cops arrested Stevenson an hour later because he looked like a description of the robber.
The cops found him carrying a loaded 9-millimeter handgun and with foil wrapped around his ankle monitor.
Stevenson was convicted of armed robbery as a juvenile in 2019. He robbed a CTA passenger while armed with a BB gun.
According to CWB Chicago:
“The 21-year sentence will be reduced by 50% for good behavior. Brosnahan also gave him credit for 425 days spent in jail before pleading and 280 days of work credits, according to court records.
“His parole date was not posted on the Illinois Department of Corrections website as of Thursday morning.”
Ouch.
