On the House floor, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) delivered an impassioned speech in which she denounced the Republican effort to have her dismissed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Omar made her address while House Republicans were getting ready to vote to remove her from the committee due to her recent anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, and other contentious remarks.
Omar compared the Republican campaign against her to how conservatives long alleged former President Barack Obama was a hidden Muslim who was born in Kenya in her statements.
In order to defend her existence, Omar then attacked the former president: “It’s no surprise that Donald Trump, a previous president, spearheaded the birther movement that claimed he was actually born in Kenya. Considering that they believed that falsely identifying the first and only [Black] president as a Muslim and an immigrant from Africa made him less American. I am a Muslim immigrant from Africa, which is interesting. Is anyone else shocked that I’m a target? Anyone surprised that I’m not considered qualified to discuss American foreign policy? or that they want to quiet me because I have a loud voice? Actually, that is anticipated. because power pushes back when it is pushed.”

“Representation is important. It is beneficial to keep broadening our conceptions of who is American and who is eligible to participate in the American experiment. I am an American, and my constituents brought me here to speak on their behalf in Congress “Omar threw in.
Omar continued by dismissing the insults leveled at her for serving on the committee and vowing to keep speaking up because “representation matters.”
If I leave this committee for one term, my leadership or voice won’t be lessened, Omar assured. “My voice will grow louder and more powerful, and my leadership will once again be praised all across the world.”
Following Omar’s speech, the House voted to remove her from the committee, and the GOP majority won the vote.
