It’s possible that some of the seemingly innocent things we do every day could have harmful long-term repercussions on our skin. For instance, consuming a lot of red meat can accelerate the aging process, and failing to use sunscreen even when you’re inside the house can cause pigmentation and make the skin look older.
At Onplusnews, we were intrigued to learn about the little things that we do every day that might be undermining our attempts to keep our skin appearing younger.
1. Chewing gum
The pattern of wrinkles that appears around the mouth of many people who chew gum is something that medical professionals attribute to the gum itself. When we chew, we may overuse our muscles, and this can contribute to small lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Runners lose fat that sits just below the surface of their skin as a byproduct of their exercise. Their wrinkles may become more pronounced as a result of the loss of fatty tissue. In addition, many runners spend extended periods of time outside without using appropriate sun protection, which puts their skin at risk of being damaged by the sun. Sunscreen’s protective power is diminished more quickly when exposed to perspiration, so if you run outside, it’s best to use a formulation that is water resistant.
3. Keeping your eyes glued to the screen of your mobile device
Using a cell phone frequently can make you appear older than you really are. The frequent tilting of the head to look at a handheld device, such as a smartphone or tablet, may contribute to the development of wrinkles in the neck that otherwise would not have been there.
4. Passing on sunglasses
Sun exposure is responsible for 80 percent of the outward manifestations of aging, including the development of wrinkles. When you squint, the creases that form in your crow’s feet become more pronounced. In addition, if you make an effort to concentrate on anything that shines a light in your eyes, you can find that the wrinkles in that area become more pronounced.
5. Using a straw to drink from a beverage
If you want to avoid having stains on your teeth, drinking coffee or tea through a straw is one way to do so, but it may cause lines to appear around your lips over time. Even though it won’t make a big difference to your lips, persons who are prone to getting lip wrinkles should try to avoid using straws very frequently. The repeated activity of your muscles tears down the collagen surrounding your mouth, which ultimately results in the formation of more creases.
6. Lying on your side while you sleep
Sleeping in particular positions can lead to wrinkles in the skin, especially if repeated over time. When you sleep on your stomach or your side, your face is compressed into your pillow, which causes the skin on your face to crease. This is most noticeable in the morning. When you sleep on your back, you also run the risk of having this happen. If you want to avoid having “sleep lines” emerge on your face, the best way to prevent this from happening is to sleep on your back.
7. Putting on a face mask to go to sleep
The skin that surrounds your eyes is exceptionally delicate and easily broken. Take extra precautions to protect it. Some sleep masks may cause the skin to become inflamed and irritated, two factors that can ultimately result in the development of wrinkles over time. When you wear a mask to bed, it shouldn’t be too tight, and it shouldn’t pull or stretch the skin in any way. If you sleep with a mask on your face, it should be comfortable.
8. Putting on one’s own contact lenses
We frequently furrow our brows whenever we engage in contact-making activities. Because of this motion’s constant repetition, the skin on our forehead has begun to wrinkle. Contact lenses, in contrast to spectacles, do not offer any protection against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause premature aging of the skin surrounding the eyes in the form of wrinkles and thinning.
