Over 26,000 COVID cases were reported in Shanghai within a 24-hour period as officials sought to reassure the city’s population that they had sufficient supply of essential commodities.
As the government sticks to its “dynamic zero COVID policy,” other Chinese cities, including Guangzhou in the south, are imposing further restrictions and erecting makeshift hospitals.
Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, reported on Sunday that relaxing the restriction would be “disastrous.”
A failure in China’s medical system could lead to a “enormous loss of life” if it abandons efforts to prevent and manage epidemics, according to the World Health Organization. Efforts to restore normalcy in Shanghai have been unsuccessful since March 28th.

More than 100 temporary hospitals have been set up in the city, with a total capacity of 160,000 people. Hospitalization is required rather than isolation at home for everyone who tests positive with COVID. A wide range of conditions can be found in medical facilities.
Videos showed half-finished facilities with mattresses strewn about and filthy conditions in the restrooms. Restrictions on citizens would be eased “dynamically,” Gu Honghui, Shanghai’s city administrator, stated.
The Shanghai government has stated that it intends to abolish the current restrictions on trade.
After two weeks without a positive case, the “prevention areas” in residential compounds can reopen. The remaining locations are either locked off or subject to controls. However, residents must remain inside the boundaries of their own district.
China’s southern city of Guangzhou has announced that it will stop teaching children in person and begin mass testing its 18 million residents.
A high-risk sector in Beijing was put on lockdown over the weekend after eight cases of COVID were recorded in the area in the last two weeks.
