By being confirmed to the United States Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman to serve on the bench, while still preserving the court’s ideological makeup.
Only three Republicans, including Maine’s Susan Collins, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, and Utah’s Mitt Romney, voted to confirm the 51-year-old federal judge’s elevation to the position of federal judge.
In the Roosevelt Room of the White House, President Joe Biden watched the voting with Jackson, his first Supreme Court pick. The vote was presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris, who was joined in the gallery by her husband, Doug Emhoff.

After retiring from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Jackson, a Harvard Law School graduate and former public defender, will take over for retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. Her appointment will make her the court’s 116th justice, its sixth female justice, and the court’s eighth non-white male justice.
Jackson’s confirmation procedure cemented the partisanship and politics in judicial selections by furthering the process of Jackson’s nomination. She garnered fewer Republican votes than either Sonia Sotomayor in 2009 or Elena Kagan in 2010, despite the fact that no Republicans stated she wasn’t qualified for the position.
Many Republican senators, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, stated that they opposed Jackson because they viewed her as an activist judge.
Republicans, according to McConnell, “want to respect the separation of powers” that the framers left us. ‘We want our judges to fulfill their restricted position in our Republic: stick to the text, rule impartially and leave policy making to policy makers,’ said Justice Kennedy.
Democrats praised Jackson’s impartiality and argued he would bring more diversity to the Supreme Court.

In a statement, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “She is going to be a pioneer, and I have no doubt in my opinion that she will pave the way for others to follow in her footsteps in the future.”
Jackson’s nomination fulfilled a 2020 campaign promise made by Joe Biden, who pledged to appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court as his first nominee. Despite Biden’s declining approval ratings, the confirmation might provide Democrats with a much-needed electoral boost as they fight to maintain control of the House and Senate in this fall’s elections.
