Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been against the idea of strict lockdowns from the start of the pandemic. Like other Republican leaders, he stands more for individual liberty than government mandates.
As a result, DeSantis has taken plenty of heat from critics who claim his “open” policy cost lives during the pandemic. Even so, the freedom of his state remains appealing to many.
That’s why the Governor’s campaign is taking advantage.
Last week, far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) vacationed in Florida and was caught hanging out with friends at a crowded bar, and without a mask.
This wasn’t the first example of a Democrat leader enjoying the anti-lockdown policies of the Sunshine State: Rep. Eric Swalwell of California was also seen there with family members.
And of course, it’s mostly Democrats who condemn DeSantis’ stance on the battling on the virus, so it seems hypocritical to see these same leftist leaders escaping to Florida for fun in the sun.
All this has given Gov. DeSantis an idea — and it’s one that’s bound to tick off liberals across the country.
From Fox News:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ reelection campaign is now selling new ‘Escape to Florida/The Lockdown Libs tour’ T-shirts after some top Democratic politicians from states with stricter coronavirus restrictions were seen vacationing in the Sunshine State over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday.
The shirt reads, “We don’t blame you … we like freedom, too.” And above it is a list of Democrats that visited the state, including the Governors of Michigan, Connecticut and New Jersey.
Recently, DeSantis joked about the number of pro-lockdown politicians that have “escaped” to his state:
If I had a dollar for every lockdown politician who decided to escape to Florida over the last two years, I’d be a pretty doggone wealthy man, let me tell you.
I mean, Congress people, mayors, governors, I mean you name it.
DeSantis added that it’s clearly hypocritical because these same politicians support draconian pandemic policies. And yet, “the first place you want to flee to” is where you’re “able to enjoy life.”
And though he did receive plenty of pushback for his resistance to lockdowns, Gov. DeSantis also became immensely popular among Republicans and right-wing voters.
He saw his popularity really spike during 2020 and 2021 and many attribute this rise specifically to his “freedom first” mantra. Other state governors that oppose lockdowns also have become more popular to the GOP.
These t-shirts are just the latest in a line of campaign merchandise for DeSantis.
There are also items with taglines like “Don’t tread on Florida” and “Don’t Fauci my Florida,” and they’re likely to be a big hit with Conservative voters. It may also propel DeSantis to even greater heights.
Many wonder if he intends to run for President in 2024, for example.
He’s considered to be a leading contender for the Republican nomination, though DeSantis has said he won’t run if former President Donald Trump runs. He may change his mind, however.
