Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, revealed in an interview on Friday that he regretted attending a Communist award event last week.
The senator spoke at the Amsted Award event on December 11, during which he presented an honorary diploma to each of the awardees. Speakers at the event often urged participants to join the Communist Party of the United States.
According to Blumenthal, in a telephone conversation with the Hartford Courant on Friday, the ceremony was entirely for labor purposes. “If I’d understood what was going on, I wouldn’t have gone…. Let me state unequivocally that I am a Democrat and a staunch supporter of American capitalism. I have been a Democrat my whole life, as well as a staunch supporter and believer in American capitalism.”
The Amistad Awards, presented by the Connecticut People’s World Committee, hosted the event. CPWC is a political advocacy group affiliated with the Communist Party.
This event was hosted by Ben McManus, who addressed the audience with the following words: “We invite you to join the Communist Party in this epic time as we work to uproot systemic racism, retool the war economy, tax the rich, address climate change,” secure voting rights and create a new socialist system that prioritizes people, peace, and planet over profits.”
Blumenthal was presented during the ceremony as a “surprise surprise guest.”
Afterwards, Blumenthal said that the award ceremony was just one of a slew of events he will be attending in a short period of time. Blumenthal said that the emphasis on labor was what drew him to the awards, and that his participation had nothing to do with his sympathy for communism.
“I attend a large number of events, venues, meetings, rallies, and ceremonies around Connecticut. ” This particular event was organized by local labor unions to honor these three individuals, and that is why I was there,” the senator told the Hartford Courant. “I’m delighted to be invited anywhere, and in this particular instance, I was invited by local labor unions in order to honor these three individuals, and that was the reason I was there.” “I think that’s about it.”
Democrat Richard Blumenthal is running for re-election in 2020.
