LOS ANGELES, CA – According to reports, Los Angeles officials have decided to target ketchup packets – more specifically, general condiment packets – in the name of combatting climate change.
This ordinance, which went into effect on November 15th, bars restaurants with 26 or more employees from giving condiment packets to patrons – lest the patron specifically asks for one. This also applies to plastic utensils, straws, and napkins, per a press release from councilmembers Paul Koretz and Paul Krekorian.
Come April of 2022, the aforementioned ordinance will expand to all restaurants in Los Angeles.
Councilmember Krekorian championed this effort as a proverbial blow to the gut in climate change.
“Larger restaurants in Los Angeles are now officially partners in the effort to address the environmental catastrophe caused by the disposal of millions of pounds of plastic waste along our beautiful California coastline.
Their compliance is critical as we aggressively counter what has been a major contribution to the climate crisis: the distribution of unneeded and unwanted plastic goods to consumers. These goods are also sustaining the fading fossil fuel industry, which is a major contributor to climate change.”
Councilmember Koretz also hyped up this endeavor, relaying a sort of ‘it takes all of us’ emotional appeal when discussing this sort of a soft-ban on condiments and plasticware.
“If we are to overcome the extreme climate challenges we face, we will have to alter or otherwise transform all our habits relating to fossil fuel products, including plastics, and our essential natural resources, like forests. Skipping the stuff to stop the frivolous waste of napkins and plasticware is another step forward as we work together towards a healthier future that can sustain us all.”
Apparently, in the event a restaurant accidentally gives a patron any unrequested “plastic utensils, condiment packages, napkins, splash sticks, toothpicks” or anything else of the sort, the restaurant will be subjected to a warning for the first two instances. Once a third one occurs, they’ll be subject to a $25 fine for each subsequent offense.
Governor Gavin Newsom approved a similar measure this past October, which will take effect by June 2022 at the latest.
