Leaked text messages indicate that Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown managed to get around NFL rules and regulations regarding COVID-19 by obtaining a fake vaccination card.
Brown’s model girlfriend Cydney Moreau reportedly sent a text message to Los Angeles chef Steven Ruiz on July 2, saying that the wide receiver was willing to pay $500 if the chef could obtain a Johnson & Johnson vaccination card for him.
“Can you get the COVID cards?” Moreau said in the text that was provided to Tampa Bay Times. Ruiz responded by saying, “I can try.”
“JNJ shot. Ab said he would give you $500,” Moreau continued.
Though Brown is not mentioned by name in the texts, “A.B.” is the nickname used for him by his friends, family, and teammates. Ruiz claims that Brown wanted the fake Johnson & Johnson card because that vaccine is only one shot and therefore requires less documentation. Brown had reportedly been telling those close to him at the time that he had fears about the harmful effects the vaccine might have on his body.
Ruiz was allegedly unable to find a vaccine card for Brown, but the chef said that the wide receiver eventually showed him fake vaccine cards that he was able to purchase for himself and Moreau weeks later. Ruiz went public with Brown after their relationship soured over an unpaid debt, with the chef claiming that the football star owes him $10,000.
Brown’s attorney has since fired back by claiming that his client is fully vaccinated.
“Antonio Brown appreciates the severity of the pandemic, which is why he got the vaccine and supports everyone for whom it is advisable to get the vaccine,” said lawyer Sean Burstyn. “Coronavirus has hit close to home as it took him out of a game. He is healthy, vaccinated, and ready to win another Super Bowl.”
“One of the worst parts of the pandemic has been a movement to cast doubt on our country’s vaccination programs with baseless, vindictive tabloid gossip,” Burstyn added.
Brown was one of the few players on his team to contract COVID-19 this season, forcing him to miss one game. The NFL has mandated that unvaccinated players must adhere to a lengthy list of severe rules imposed by the league, including wearing masks and practicing social distancing at all times. The NFL has yet to comment on this report about Brown, but it has already imposed fines on other players who have broken the league’s COVID-19 rules.
