TAIWAN – Even as Chinese ruler Xi Jinping had a virtual session with President Joe Biden on November 16th, Chinese aircraft again invaded Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Since the beginning of November, this was the 14th such infiltration.
The ADIZ incursion on November 16th was significantly smaller than the massive Chinese military flights that heightened tensions in the area in October. This incident included two Chinese Shenyang J-11 fighters, two Chengdu J-10 fighters, one Shaanxi Y-8 electronic intelligence turboprop, and one Shaanxi Y-8 equipped for electronic warfare, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND).
Taiwanese aircraft and radio warnings greeted the six Chinese aircraft as they approached the southwestern corner of Taiwan’s ADIZ. Air-defense missile systems were also activated, according to the MND, and were tasked with monitoring the Chinese aircraft.
Because it encompasses numerous strategic points that might become vital for keeping partner troops at bay during a Chinese invasion, the southwestern region of Taiwan’s ADIZ favors such Chinese demonstrations. Submarines would be critical in maintaining control of the region, and China’s intrusions in the last year have regularly included anti-submarine planes.
Every day in November, except for November 3rd, has seen a Chinese incursion into the ADIZ, according to Taiwan News, signaling a significant uptick in the pace of China’s “grey zone” tactics, which basically boils down to repeatedly bothering the Taiwanese with obnoxious behavior and forcing the much smaller Taiwanese air force to respond.

The PLA also started night bombing exercises off the coast of Hainan in the South China Sea, dispatching scores of J-6 heavy bombers to perform combat runs against ships and ground units. The exercises are creating “a solid foundation for fighting night battles,” according to the PLA’s Southern Theater Command on November 15th.
On November 16th, the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to comment on a local media claim that Taiwan would undertake high-level military talks with the U.S. in the coming days.
Allegedly two-yearly bilateral military meetings will reportedly be consolidated into a single event, according to the aforementioned local report published by Liberty Times, which assistant secretaries and deputy defense ministers from the United States and Taiwan are expected to attend.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would only remark that Taiwan and the U.S. have “close relations and open bilateral communication” and that the two countries “regularly hold discussions in issues of common interest.”
