With the 2020 Winter Olympics just a few months away, the Biden administration is expected to stage a diplomatic boycott of the games since it is being held in Beijing. The news that President Joe Biden would take such a strong stance against China comes after new reports showing China as the richest nation in the world. The boycott will supposedly be due to China’s human rights abuses and not due to the theory that COVID-19 originated from a Chinese lab. But while the Biden administration hasn’t made a definite decision to boycott the games, the gesture is merely symbolic as Americans will still participate.
Although the recommendation has been put in Biden’s hands, the President has yet to make a decision on it. But according to sources, an announcement should be made no later than the end of this month.
The move to boycott the Beijing Olympics is just the latest controversy to surround the 2022 winter games. The International Olympic Committee has already banned all overseas spectators from attending the games due to COVID-19 and the hysteria surrounding it.
Speaking to reporters, American Enterprise Institute fellow Michael Mazza said, “They are trying to thread the needle. They are trying to make sure that with any actions they take, the burden doesn’t fall on athletes. The Biden administration also wants to make sure they are not too far out on a limb compared to allies and partners.”
While the boycott is still on the table, it should be noted that during President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s 240-minute conversation, there wasn’t a single mention or invitation to the winter Olympics.
According to the White House readout,” President Biden raised concerns about the [People’s Republic of China’s] practices in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, as well as human rights more broadly.”
On top of the news of a potential boycott, there have been many Americans and politicians who have called for a full-blown boycott of the Olympics being held in China. While a bit extreme for the Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi offered a more friendly approach to the issue.
“What moral authority do you have to speak again about human rights any place in the world if you’re willing to pay your respects to the Chinese government as they commit genocide? So, honor your athletes at home. Let’s have a diplomatic boycott.” Pelosi added, “Silence on this issue is unacceptable. It enables China’s abuses.”
Trying to take a stand, Pelosi quickly crumbled as the Chinese government denied the accusation being brought against them. They claimed Pelosi’s words were “lies and disinformation.” They added that “the so-called human rights issue as a pretext to smear and slander China.”
