An Austin Texas High School principal has taken drastic measures to put an end to drug use and other “behavioral events” at the school by taking the doors off the bathrooms.
Christina Steele Hantgin is the principal of Travis Early College High School. She did communicate her decision to parents in a letter about removing the bathroom doors after the decision had already been implemented.
According to some of the information in the letter, Hantgin claims that there have been behavioral and conduct violations inside the bathrooms. Approximately 90 percent of the violations are drug-related.
“My number one priority is safety. Removing the doors is one of many strategies we are planning or implementing to keep our campus a safe learning environment.” – Principal Hangin
Hantgin claims that since the bathroom doors have been removed, there have been no drug violations
While no stall can be viewed from the hallway outside the bathroom, it still seems like a privacy violation for individuals who need to use the restroom. However, Hantgin claims every other attempt to stop the violations inside of the bathrooms has failed. The school attempted to lock bathroom doors that could not be monitored, but the process was taking up too much time.
