While appearing on “Fox & Friends” with the Governor, Fiona explained that she simply does not like wearing a mask. Unfortunately, the little girl has been disciplined by her school 16 times for refusing comply with wearing a mask, and was most recently suspended for 36 days.
“I’m not wearing a mask because you touch it, and you have germs on your hand,” she said. “And then you put it on your face and breathe in all the germs.”
Though DeSantis signed a law back in July banning schools from enforcing mask mandates, several counties have refused to comply with it. One of these counties is Palm Beach, where Fiona attends school.
“We’ve had a lot of litigation since then. Fortunately, we’re winning all these cases,” DeSantis said, going on to say that the decision of whether kids where masks should be up to parents, not school boards.
“We’re going to make sure that folks are able to go to school in the best possible way for them and for their learning experience,” he said.
Because of her suspension and the number of days she’s been forced to take off, Fiona may even need to repeat the second grade.
“I don’t feel good about that,” she said. “I don’t want to take the grade over again.”
DeSantis slammed Fiona’s suspension as being “totally unacceptable” before calling out school board members who “cavort around maskless” while requiring students to wear them.
Though the Palm Beach County school district has said that the indoor mask requirement was put in place before the school year due to a “rapid rise in cases,” DeSantis wasn’t having any of it.
“All 67 counties have had huge declines in COVID cases among school-age kids,” he said. “Most of them did not have forced masking. So this is not something that’s been proven to be effective. And obviously, as we see with Fiona, it has caused some of our students harm.”
From the start of this pandemic, DeSantis has been taking a stand for the rights of parents to make their own decisions regarding whether or not their children wear masks. This goes along with his fight to protect the rights of individuals when it comes to deciding whether or not to mask up or get vaccinated.
