House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared maskless in a photo with billionaire investor George Soros and his son Alexander, the latter of whom said it “was good seeing” her over the “weekend.”
“In Pelosi we trust! Was good seeing @SpeakerPelosi this weekend,” Alexander wrote on Twitter Thursday.
There is no context given for the meeting, though Pelosi and Soros have shared time in the past.
In November 2017, Soros and Pelosi were headliners at a gathering of “anti-Trump elite” in Carlsbad, Calif., as the Washington Free Beacon noted:
A secretive three-day conference where big money liberal donors are plotting the next steps of the “resistance” will be headlined by Friday speeches by billionaire George Soros and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, according to internal documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
The Democracy Alliance, a donor club of deep-pocketed liberal donors that each pledge to direct hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to approved left-wing groups, descended on California’s posh La Costa Resort on Wednesday morning for its fall donor summit. The group continued its tradition of secrecy, promising all members and guests of the summit their participation would “remain confidential.”
Other speakers appearing in person or via video were expected to include U.S. Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.; U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-Minn.; and Democrats Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania and governor-elect Ralph Northam of Virginia.
More recently, Pelosi and Soros have donated large sums of money to a group run by Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder called the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which is essentially an organization pushing to gerrymander congressional districts in a way that benefits Democrats.
Pelosi, through a political action committee run by her husband Paul, funneled $300,000 to Holder’s group, while Soros pitched in an additional six-figure donation as well.
In 2019, the Speaker claimed she was against gerrymandering.
“This year, the Democratic Majority passed H.R. 1, the For The People Act, which works to end to partisan gerrymandering by requiring all states to establish independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions to draw open and transparent statewide district maps after each Census,” Pelosi said.
“We will continue to fight partisan gerrymandering, ensure every citizen’s vote counts and oppose any attempt to compromise the integrity of our democracy,” she added.
The Free Beacon, in a separate report, added:
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee was born out of a quiet strategy session between former president Barack Obama, Pelosi, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), and former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe before Obama left the White House. The group identified breaking up Republican-controlled legislatures as a top priority. Holder has said the group’s mission is “personal” to Obama, who resented Republicans for disrupting his agenda in the House of Representatives.
Soros, meanwhile, poured money into a ‘defund the police’ effort earlier this summer even as crime has continued to skyrocket in jurisdictions around the country. And earlier this month, one of Soros’ organizations donated more money to a PAC supporting embattled California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom as he faces a recall election next week (though early voting began weeks ago), bringing total donations to $1 million.
As for Pelosi, the mask issue is relevant simply because she recently reimposed a mandate for the House despite the fact that nearly all members are vaccinated, drawing criticism from a predecessor, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.
“[W]atching Pelosi become a dictator, watching her break every single rule, watching her run things entirely on her own, I think, is the most destructive thing I’ve seen done by any American politician in a very, very long time,” he told “The Cats Roundtable” radio show.
