While many students around the country are already dealing with mask mandates, apparently a California teacher instructed her students to pledge allegiance to the gay pride flag when she found the American flag to make her feel “uncomfortable”. Finding the idea to be video worthy, the teacher, Kristin Pitzen, posted a video of her on social media, recalling the story. Now, according to the school district, Pitzen has been put on leave.
Annette Franco, a spokesperson for the Newport Mesa School District, told outlets, “We are aware that one of our teachers posted a video on their personal social media that caused alarm and concern related to saluting the American flag.” She added, “Showing respect for our nation’s flag is an important value that we instill in our students and an expectation of our employees. I assure you, we take matters like this seriously and will be taking action to address it.”
While Franco said the investigation is still ongoing, she added, “The teacher is no longer in the classroom. We follow due process and our investigation continues.”
Even with Pitzen being removed and the video since deleted, former director of national intelligence Richard Grenell still felt the need to voice his opinion on the matter. “What kind of parent would allow their child to be taught by this wacko? Why are parents turning their kids over to someone they don’t know? I’d like to talk to people who think this is good?!?”
As first reported by KTLA, “The school district’s policy requires that each school conducts daily patriotic exercises, including the pledge of allegiance, with an understanding that the pledge is an expression of patriotism and pride in the U.S. But individuals may choose not to participate in the flag salute for personal reasons.”
Already mentioned above, the video and Pitzen’s TikTok account have been deleted, but thanks to Twitter, the video was saved and has been viewed 1.6 million times. Not to mention, the original tweet has over 6,000 likes.
