According to estimates earlier this year from the Costs of War Project at Brown University, the War in Afghanistan, which started in 2001 through April 2021, has cost U.S. taxpayers approximately $2.261 trillion.
On Thursday, we learned the Biden Administration was sending American troops back over to that theater to provide security for those still operating in the American Embassy, and that’s after troops were being pulled out of that area.
Most Americans have been noticing that the security situation in Afghanistan had been deteriorating weeks before a vast majority of U.S. troops were to withdraw from the country permanently.
Republican lawmakers targeting Biden’s decision-making accused his administration of mishandling the drawdown. What’s funny is there is no way that Biden can defend how he screwed this up. Biden argued the rapid withdrawal is necessary. Biden also called for an end to “the forever war” in Afghanistan, and now this move to return troops seems like a huge embarrassment to our country.
If you want to be honest, we should have spent that two trillion here fighting our enemy at home － liberal democrats.
Our political leaders are uniformly incapable of learning from history. Like in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, the US sought to defeat a highly motivated enemy willing to fight an asymmetrical war for however long it takes to win. Just like in Vietnam, the US allied itself with an extremely unpopular and corrupt government whose army lacked the motivation of the enemy and the support of the people. Just like in Vietnam, the enemy was aided with material support from neighboring countries. And just like in Vietnam, the US was unwilling to fight the war the way it fought WW2, to accept nothing but unconditional surrender by totally mobilizing the country and utterly destroying the enemy’s ability to fight.
A majority of the American people will never accept the level of horror and destruction needed to win. But our leaders went into this war anyway, wasting thousands of American lives and trillions of taxpayers’ dollars.
Russia gave up on Afganistán before the US went in. It was never about winning. It was about business, war business. The arms industry is the biggest business on earth. The US is the leading manufacturer. No conflicts, no business. So, which part of the earth is next to support the business of death?
I can understand pulling troops out, but at least do it in a manner that isn’t embarrassing to the world. Suddenly sending troops there to get Americans out before it falls into Taliban hands reeks of complete and utter incompetence. Sadly, we appear to have the JV team running things here now.
As much as I think the Afghan/Iraq occupation was wrong-headed and that nation-building isn’t the military’s job, Afghanistan and Iraq were examples of an American victory. But with the current crop of Democrats and their dementia leader, we sure can’t have anything like that around, can we? Welcome to American decline. I miss Trump.
Why should we spend one more dollar or lose one more US soldier propping up a government that can’t stand on its own? Enough. Let the Afghans figure this one out.
