We all know that thousands upon thousands of people are leaving blue states to move to red states. The massive move has dubbed the blue state migrants as “leftugees” by some commentators.
However, even though the move does give credence to Republican laws and policies, it does have many people worried that those moving will continue voting blue in their new home, causing the state they moved to, to turn blue, essentially turning into what they fled from in the first place.
It is certainly true that the amount of people leaving blue states is astounding. “Leftugees” are more and more fleeing blue states, as well as blue counties for solid red areas. According to the US census bureau, the top states seeing a massive exodus are all democrat-controlled; California, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Illinois. These Democrat states lost a combined number of 4-million residents. On the other end, U-Haul reported that the top five states to see the greatest influx are all Republican states; Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Ohio, and Arizona.
California, if we go by people who decide to leave, is one of the worst states. According to the US census, every year, for the past 15 years, an average number of 100,000 Californians leave the state. Just in 2019, 650,000 people left California.
In terms of cities, however, New York City takes the win, with an average of 300 people leaving per day in 2019. The numbers, of course, exponentially grew during coronavirus for all these blue areas.
Because of the massive new influx of residents, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, gained a combined four seats in Congress, for 2023. This ends up granting them, collectively, as many new votes in the electoral college for the next presidential election, as what the state of Hawaii has in total.
The question everyone asks: will this mass influx of new voters from blue states to red states bring their liberal politics to their new home? However, a number of polls have been conducted among the blue state expats who moved from California to Texas. In fact, even back in 2018, A CNN exit poll showed that native Texans were more likely to vote for the Democrat Beto O’Rourke, and among transplants to Texas, there were more likely to vote for Ted Cruz.
Just last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, turned some heads when he confirmed that the overwhelming number of people that are moving from blue states to red states like Florida, are indeed registering Republican.
