Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton was among the first, if not the first, elected leader to realize something was amiss in Wuhan, China, months before the COVID-19 pandemic reached U.S. shores.
Whether he was privy to intelligence reports or if he was using other sources of information, he warned early on that ‘something’ had happened at the bio-lab in that city, the only Level 4 facility in China.
Citizens were being removed from the streets and remanded to hospitals, while lockdowns were imposed on the general population, among other emergency measures. Clearly, the Chinese were reacting to a threat.
A few months later, of course, we discovered what it was: A novel coronavirus that was ravaging through countries and killing mostly older, infirm people and those with preexisting comorbidities.
But what was COVID-19, and how did it come into being?
For more than a year we’ve been told that the virus naturally occurred — some sort of weird mating of ‘bat’ this and ‘wet market’ that. Not everyone bought into that explanation, however, and Cotton was one who did not. He has said often that he believes the virus was manufactured in that Wuhan lab, and over the weekend, even Dr. Anthony ‘Flip-Flop’ Fauci, who has regularly denounced such a theory as wild, dangerous conspiracy, was reported to have said earlier this month that he, too, is open to that possibility.
Cotton, however, isn’t overjoyed that the anointed Fauci may finally be coming around to a COVID reality that a Chinese scientist espoused last fall during an appearance on Fox News’s Tucker Carlson program. And in fact, he believes Fauci is being mealy-mouthed about the whole thing because maybe, just maybe, the agency he has run since the early 1980s, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, funded the development of the virus through dangerous “gain of function research.”
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Cotton, a U.S. Army veteran infantry officer and Harvard-educated lawyer, said he believes Fauci was “playing word games” during testimony earlier this month when he denied that the National Institutes of Health funded that research.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 months since you and I first discussed what I think most Arkansans think is a very common-sense proposition, but it surely is a big coincidence that this virus started not up in some remote mountain village with caves full of bats but rather in downtown Wuhan – a city larger than New York just a few blocks up the road from labs that were researching bat-based coronaviruses,” Cotton told host Maria Bartiromo.
“And since then, every bit of circumstantial evidence to include evidence that came out in the final days of the Trump administration that some employees and staff in these labs may have had coronavirus-like symptoms as early as October or September of 2019 continues to point to these labs as the origin of the virus, not that food market that the Chinese Communist Party used as a cover story from the very beginning,” he added.
Cotton noted further:
Dr. Fauci has been to Congress, and he said this absolutely did not happen, but Dr. Fauci is playing word games. So the money that the NIH gave went to an American organization, which turned around and gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to these Wuhan labs to investigate coronaviruses, and yes, to find ways to make them more contagious and more dangerous.
We asked Francis Collins, who is Dr. Fauci’s boss, to come clean, tell us exactly what was happening, why this research was being funded, as you point out, Maria, during a time in which the Obama administration had explicitly banned this kind of gain of function research – research into making some of the world’s deadliest pathogens in even more dangerous.
And I think that there could be an example here of these public health bureaucrats thinking that they know better, that they’re not going to answer to political oversight and accountability even in the Obama administration, and they went ahead with this research that could be very dangerous. That’s why it is imperative that the NIH come clean and tell us exactly what happened.
The jig is up on Fauci, which explains why he now is leaning towards the ‘escaped from the lab’ “theory.” He knows he’s about to get busted.
But the real question is, what’s Joe Biden going to do about it? Because he still has China to deal with.
