Democrat leaders from lockdown states continue to hypocritically shrug off following their own COVID restrictions. The latest culprit is Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is now taking fire for her recent sunny trip to Florida.
Few governors have ruled with a heavier iron fist than Whitmer. She has acted as a dictator with the selective closures of businesses deemed to be “not essential”, meanwhile keeping liquor and marijuana stores open. A punishing blow to Michiganders who lost their jobs and livelihoods as a result.
Despite Whitmer’s dictatorial tendencies, the Wolverine State has failed miserably in controlling the virus as they currently stand in the midst of an explosion of cases. The spike was sufficiently concerning so as to merit a call from Biden’s new CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky to close the state down again.
Now the governor is facing serious blowback after the news of her travel to the Sunshine State broke. She is being accused of maintaining a double standard with her “rules for thee, not for me” style of public service.

State Republicans hammered her for the hypocrisy during a press conference according to MLive:
Rep. Mark Hall blasted Whitmer for the state’s travel restrictions and, “not holding herself and her administration to those same standards.” Rep. Matt Maddock pointed out that there had been arrests for violating Whitmer’s orders and asked, “Why wasn’t she arrested by the Michigan State Police?”
A defensive Whitmer made an excuse for her rulebreaking by claiming that she was visiting her elderly father who lives in Florida. She flatly denied accusations that she had traveled south like many other snowbirds in order to enjoy spring break frolicking on one of the state’s beaches.

According to Whitmer, “It’s maddening because a lot of these same people would accuse me of not having family values if I didn’t show up when a family member needed some help, right? It was a two-day trip, I wasn’t out partying in Miami,” huffed the governor.
She added, “It’s a very different situation than what they’re portraying and I think unfortunately in this environment, it seems like I think people are more focused on scoring political points and actually doing the work to keep people safe and to get our economy back on track,” Whitmer said.
On the day before her trip was revealed Whitmer claimed that Florida was teeming with one of the mysterious “variants” during one of her Sunday morning “news” show appearances. NBC’s Chuck Todd threw softball questions to Whitmer, alongside her Dr. Fauci pillow prominently displayed on the shelf behind her (not made purposefully visible to score political points of course).

With the fruits of her miserable handling of COVID now fully evident, and with new cases exploding, Whitmer has backed down on her authoritarian impulses. She uncharacteristically declined to totally lock down the state per the CDC’s advice.
During her visit with Todd on NBC’s flagship “Meet The Press” Whitmer blamed her sudden lack of enthusiasm for lording it over Michigan residents on Republicans.

Todd said “You know, Governor, a lot of people think you’re changing your tune slightly,” he said before playing a series of video clips. He then asked; “So what’s changed? Is it the fatigue? Is it the — the blowback you’ve been getting? Is it all of it?”
Whitmer replied, “A lot of things have changed. You know, 15 months ago, we didn’t know that this virus could be contained by the simple act of wearing a mask. We did not have PPE at our fingertips. We certainly didn’t have the testing or the vaccines. We’re now in a much different position. On top of that, in the waning months I have been sued by my legislature, I have lost in a Republican-controlled Supreme Court, and I don’t have all of the exact same tools.”
Gavin Newsom in California, Andrew Cuomo in New York, and Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan were all praised as heroes by the media last year. Now the political blowback has arrived for these Three Stooges, and there are few things that are more widely disliked than hypocrites.
