Denmark becomes the first European nation to completely shun the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine. This Tuesday the European nation announced that it would stop using the Oxford University- AstraZeneca COVID Vaccine altogether over concerns of serious side effects.
In a press conference Danish Health Authority director Soren Brostrom said, “Denmark’s vaccination campaign will go ahead without the AstraZeneca vaccine”. This comes despite the recommendations by Europe’s World Health Organization medical regulator to continue using the inoculation.
Denmark was also the first country in Europe to suspend the use of the AstraZeneca jab during the vaccine rollout after serious reports of blood clots among those who had received the vaccine. After which dozens of countries followed Denmark and all but a few have resumed the use of the vaccine. This decision was upheld even after the European Medicine Agency (EMA) deemed it “safe and effective” and emphasized its benefits.
Despite of EMA’s recommendations Denmark continued to hold off and continued investigations on its own. In the Scandinavian nation there were two cases of thrombosis reported, one of the cases being fatal. They were linked to the vaccinations after more than 140 thousand people received the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company.
Denmark has continued to vaccinate people with the Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna shots. The suspension of AstraZeneca only delayed the vaccine rollout plan of the Scandinavian nation. However, the Danish Health Authority said in a statement that the availability of other vaccines, combined with the pandemic being under control, means the process can go forward without it.
